I am so grateful for the variety of styles, colors and options that have become available, even in the plus size area; and yes plus size is sexy too, in case you were wondering.

Of course, most simulated combat LARPs are all PVP, or largely driven by it. Some are not, but those are closer to your live-combat style, only without the live combat (though there are hybrid forms, like Threads of Damocles).

Hmm. I call shenanigans. I don't think it's only the geeky guys with unrealistic expectations. I've known plenty of "normal" guys with shallow, conformist standards who are dismissive of any woman who doesn't immediately make the cut on first glance. I don't know... I'm not saying geeky guys are desperate (though many are), but they tend to be very receptive to *any* attention from the ladies. And I think by virtue of their nonconformist/outcast status, the nerd guys are more willing to make their relationships work, because they know that women aren't exactly banging down their door.

Hello Tara!

As we came across this site and discovered that you're also a creative professional writer, we just wanted to make you aware of www.larpingkingdoms.com - a fantastic new site about larping, complete with a calendar, forum, blog and a fantastic new web series, Damsels and Dragons. Six lovable (and dedicated!) girls with their own larping group.

I think that your readers will really dig what we are providing the larping community, as a nice compliment to the info on your site. Please check us out and share us with your email list, and of course, your thoughts.

We hope that you enjoy Damsels and Dragons almost half as much as we do. It was a blast to shoot!

Cheers,
May Zayan

Myself have always been against IG relationships. It really messes things up in the long run. Especially if what was supposed to be IG feelings only spills over into real life. I just think Larps should just avoid it altogether. Now the larps I have been a part of I have not witnessed ig relationships. Or a demand to have one. But have seen the topic of sex come up in a different message board that made me cringe. Whether it's imaginative or not. That's another subject that should be avoided in a larp. Anyways hope I have helped. As far as the highschool rumoru mongering. Unfortunately that is everywhere.

Yeah, I think it depends upon the atmosphere of the LARP and the type of LARP you are at! If you are at one where IG relationships are expected and you are married, you could be asking for trouble if you want to participate in them without having an open relationship.

Being in the same position as the couple you mentioned, I definitely think it is beneficial to have non-LARP friends and LARP friends who like to participate in unrelated activities. Especially as a person who helps run a game, it's really important to do non-game activities with them and others since the game takes up a lot of time!

Indeed, Tara.

As far as relationships go, that just makes it even more complicated. If both partners LARP, any sort of IG conflicts can easily escalate into OOG ones if both people can't separate the player from the character. Or IG relationships may cross boundaries and cause problems in the OOG relationships, even if the two partners discussed things beforehand.

Really, it's just like anything in that some people get too wrapped up in their hobbies and can forget that it is game and that the other players do have feelings and lives outside of it.

But your high school comment is dead on, and that very reason is why some close friends of mine have just quit LARPing all together (despite how much they love it). They are getting ready to start a family and came to the realization that the backstabbing and cattiness that was pervasive in the LARPing circles they played within was not the sort of environment they wanted to expose their children to.

Larp Tower, I agree with your opinion about how and why this kind of thing can start.

How unfortunate that people have lost such important parts of their life due to this. When LARPing, I sometimes wonder why I have just paid to subject myself to high school all over again. Having the upper hand/chance to be popular due to my gender or the people I'm hanging out with doesn't make me feel better, and that's a good lesson learned.

For those involved in relationships and LARPing (especially the younger folks), I would definitely suggest just flat out talking about it with your significant other. I bet it is more difficult when one person LARPs and the other does not.

This kind of thing can happen in any social-based setting, but at LARPs or faires or cons, people are assuming another role at times, and can become more aggressive/defensive/predatory/mean-spirited.
